The number of tourists visiting Siem Reap province in the first three months of this year increased by 10 percent, compared with the first quarter of 2009, an official said Monday. An estimated 667,068 international and domestic travellers visited the province home to Angkor Wat in 2009, compared with 605,862 last year. Ghov Seng Kak, president of the provincial tourism department, said that 336,102 of visitors were foreigners, an increase of 12.7 percent on last year. He added that the number of tourists who visited the province during the three days of Khmer New Year dropped by 6.1 percent year-on-year, to 106,245 from 113,180. But of those, he added, foreign visitor numbers increased 16.6 percent to 8,061 from 6,916.
